Apple Makes an Exception, Allows Twitter Overrun Unwritten Rule

Only one letter of the English alphabet interests Elon Musk, and that letter is X. That is Twitter’s new name, but the change has resulted in an unanticipated problem. App Store platform rules implicitly stipulate that app names must have at least two characters.

Apple made an exception for Musk, allowing him to modify the name of the app to simply “X,” as seen here:

X is the future state of limitless interactivity, centered on audio, video, message, and payments/banking, which will create a worldwide marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. X, powered by AI, will connect us all in ways we can only begin to imagine. It remains to be seen whether this rebranding is a good idea or not; after all, Twitter was once a household name.

When Google and Facebook reorganized into Alphabet and Meta, respectively, they retained the names of their most popular products. It’s not only the site/app name; the word “tweet” had entered widespread usage, but it has now been replaced with the generic “post.”
