Senators Warn Tinubu Over Military Intervention in Niger

Senators from the North in the 10th National Assembly have cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to utilize military intervention to end the situation in Niger.

Sen. Suleiman Sumaila, a member of the Northern Senators Forum, confirmed this in a statement he issued on Friday. The senators urged the president to reestablish democracy in Niger through diplomatic and political means.

Military intervention in Niger would also have an effect on Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno, according to NSF. To restore a democratic government in the Niger Republic, however, political and diplomatic tactics should take precedence.

“Until all other options have been considered, we oppose the deployment of military force since doing so would result in casualties among law-abiding citizens going about their daily lives. Additionally, roughly seven northern states with borders with the Niger Republic—Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, and Borno—will suffer.

Wakenews reports that the military junta in Niger broke diplomatic ties with Nigeria after the ECOWAS envoy tasked with mediating peace in the country failed to do so.

A military coup removed Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected leader of Niger, last month. The tension in the West African region is still rising.
