Ministerial Nomination: criticize South-East leaders, not President Tinubu, says Okechukwu

Five people from the area were chosen to serve in President Tinubu’s cabinet, but a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has cleared Tinubu of any misconduct in the selection process.

Some South-East MPs have criticized President Tinubu for underestimating the region in his selection of the cabinet. The South-East received its constitutional five positions from a total of 48 nominations, but other zones received more slots.

But Mr. Okechukwu, a founding member of the APC, remarked that “instead of blaming him, we should rather blame our so-called South East APC leaders” in answer to inquiries from newsmen in the state of Enugu on Sunday on the allegedly discriminatory treatment of the South East.

We must be careful in our research by using pragmatic analysis, said Okechukwu, Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON). “As you all know, I am not President Tinubu’s apologist,” he said.

“In my opinion, we should hold our APC leaders to a higher standard of accountability because their lobbying strategies tended to be more self-centered than to advance the real interests of the South East. One of them serves as the chair of the APC Governors Forum, the dominant Power Bloc, and the other is already a senator.

He continued, “To be honest, I was worried since they were impeding our first eleven, and one of them was ridiculously busy routing for himself as if he were the only qualified person from his State. Others were trying to buy elephants, but their method was like chasing rats.

Okechukwu, who was accused of using political maneuvers to gain favor, reminded reporters that it is known that he was the only one to openly implore Tinubu in December 2021 “to support any Igbo in the race, and his men replied instantly that the Kingmaker wants to be King.” A seasoned politician like Tinubu doesn’t require a lobbying plan to give the South East its fair share.

Okechukwu questioned why we obtained the lowest regional score in the presidential election. Is it, not the case that from the start, these so-called leaders bent and dislocated the South East APC’s infrastructure from the ward level to the State level?
