Senate to investigate 10,000 abandoned projects- Deputy Minority Leader

According to Senator Kamorudeen Lere Oyewumi, the deputy minority leader of the Nigerian Senate, over 10,000 government projects have been abandoned at various stages across the nation.

The Upper Legislative Chamber, according to Oyewumi, has given the go-ahead for a full investigation of the abandoned projects with a view to reviving them where necessary for the good of the country.

When speaking with reporters, the senator who represents Osun West indicated that the investigation’s goals were to determine the viability of the projects, the causes of their abandonment, and the amount of money invested in them.

In order to prevent the goals of their conception from being thwarted, he claimed that specialists from a variety of sectors had been gathered to assess the value and expense to the current administration of reviving the programs.

The former National Population Commission (NPC) commissioner also made a suggestion that the contractors who gave up on the projects would be identified and urged to return to the locations.

He further stated that anyone found to have broken the law would be turned over to the appropriate anti-corruption agency for further action.

The Senator declared that the current administration would take drastic measures to lessen the unsightly national shame, lamenting that examples of project abandonment have grown serious and intolerable.

“Now that the ‘committee work has been done’ procedures executed and senators have been allocated to committees, they have made a solid start by concentrating on instances of abandoned projects.

“Various committees have been given 10th Senate members as members. The Senate is now on break, but we will be back on September 25 to resume our legislative business with renewed zest. It’s important you know that the 10th Senate is known as the correcting Senate.

“This was the outcome of a tonne of observations and brainstorming before we came up with it. The majority of the members of the 10th Senate were elected for their third or fourth terms. They had served in previous administrations. Therefore, we have witnessed misconduct, and when we do anything wrong, we must adjust the way we do it.

“If not, we will proceed to have the same pathetic outcome. It must be clear that what to expect from us will be different from what you have been seeing if we ourselves have designated the 10th Senate as a corrective Senate.

“Let me just give you one clue to the whole puzzle; we discovered that there are over 10,000 abandoned projects nationwide.

“These are projects that have undergone all the necessary steps, and in looking at the estimation of the government, they have already been given to the residents of the aforementioned communities.

But regrettably, when you get there, nothing has been done, the senator remarked, pleading with Nigerians to cooperate as much as possible to help the Senate accomplish its objectives.
