2500 dispatch riders as been permitted to operate in Abuja while their registration is still withheld

Not more than 2500 dispatch riders have been given clearance to work in Abuja. The head of public relations and enlightenment at DRTS (Directorate of Road Traffic Services), Mr. Kalu Emetu revealed this during a discussion with the representatives of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

Mr. Emetu further revealed that the Federal capital territory Administration has been temporarily withheld the registration of dispatch riders in Abuja. According to Mr. Kalu Emetu, this short lived suspension of registration of dispatch riders because of disobedience on their path obey traffic rules and conditions in the city.

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services has continued to have all sorts of engagements with the dispatch riders making them to prioritise and obey traffic laws in the city, Still all the efforts made by him to make them cooperate has proved abortive.

Uncooperative dispatch riders in Abuja

Dispatch riders are useful as we’ve entered the era of remote work and other parts of socio economic activities which is steadily on the rise. Without arguments the biggest players in this large economy are the financiers behind the trade that is been dispensed online with general commerce.

From food delivery to house hold items, transfer of important documents and other essentials, the dispatch riders have become a strong force in the daily activities of commerce in the Nigeria, and the role they play in aiding Nigerian business can never be displaced.

Regardless, It is hard to overlook the tendency of this dispatch riders to be hyperactive because of their promise to be instantly deliver which their employers promise and with the way sameday delivery has become avenue and selling point, the disptach riders become stubborn to obey traffic regulations while they ignore personal and public safety which is likely to land them in trouble with the law.

To curb their excesses the administration of Nigeria’s capital appears to be doing more by taking good measures.

According to Kalu Emetu, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has already seized the motorcycles of numerous dispatch riders and arrested them for breaking traffic laws. Riding in the other direction of traffic, speeding, and careless riding are a few of these traffic laws.

But Mr. Kalu expressed dismay at the fact that these delivery riders have persisted in disobeying traffic laws despite the Directorate’s best efforts. The Directorate has now suspended the registration of additional riders to stop the public disturbance from getting worse due to this disregard.

Additionally, he disclosed that the Directorate is thinking of restricting dispatch riders to particular routes, particularly in the city centre.

It is unclear how this would pan out, even though he expressed confidence that implementing these new restrictions will aid in addressing and reducing the excesses of dispatch riders, particularly in the city centre.
