Condition for peace set between Akume and Alia by APC Stakeholders

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Benue State have set conditions for supporting Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

The stakeholders pledged that unless the governor recognizes the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, as the state’s party leader, he (Alia) will not have their support.

This comes at a time when the party is experiencing an internal leadership crisis.

According to sources, the conflict arose as a result of the struggle between Governor Alia and Akume, the state’s former governor, for control of the party structure.

The issue took a new turn over the weekend when security personnel reportedly confronted the State APC executive, led by the party’s embattled chairman, Comrade Austin Agada, and other stakeholders.

The stakeholders insisted on holding their scheduled meeting to welcome Dr. Matthias Byuan, who had recently acquired a federal government job mediated by Akume.

This was despite the governor’s instruction to ban all political meetings in the state due to security concerns.

However, in a meeting held at the SGF’s villa in Makurdi that ended on Monday morning, the stakeholders unanimously agreed to continue queuing behind Akume as the party’s leader in the state.

While addressing the stakeholders at the meeting, Byuan voiced disappointment with Alia, claiming that the governor went on radio to blame him and other party stakeholders for the physical violence at the party’s secretariat on Friday.

He explained “I was just coming home to show you (stakeholders) the letter of the appointment that the SGF facilitated for me.

“We were driving straight to the party office when some youths came and fought us, but our youths overpowered them and entered the secretariat before police started to shoot tear gas”.
