Ex Chief of staff to Buhari bags International appointment after exiting office

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff under President Muhammadu Buhari, has been nominated to lead a 120-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Senegal’s presidential election on March 24, 2024.

The key election, previously slated for February 25, 2024, contains 19 presidential contenders, one of whom is a woman, and is critical to the region’s democratic processes.

The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission consists of 120 people, 14 Long-Term Observers (LTOs) and 106 Short-Term Observers from a variety of sectors, including government ministries, electoral commissions, civil society organizations, and the ECOWAS Parliament.

The mission’s goal is to support and monitor Senegal’s electoral process while guaranteeing respect to democratic principles and best practices.

The mission focuses on fundamental areas of the electoral process, including as constitutional and electoral rules, conflict resolution, gender inclusion, and media coverage.

The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission is supported by a technical team directed by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah and Mr. Serigne Ka, who provide logistical and technical assistance to the mission.
