Court rejects bail for Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to admit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to bail on terrorism charges.

According to sources, the judge rejected to grant Kanu bail because his previous application had been denied.

According to Justice Nyako, Kanu’s only choice was to dispute the prior refusal in the Court of Appeal.

For security reasons, the Judge also refused to allow anyone to visit Kanu in detention without restriction.

Kanu had requested for fresh release on February 26 and based his motion primarily on the fact that unless admitted to bail, he would be unable to present a strong defense to the accusations against him.

In addition, he claimed to have acute hypertension and acute cardiac problems.

However, the federal government objected to the proposal, claiming that Kanu had previously been given bail but then leaped and fled the country.

Instead of making the same request, Justice Nyako asked the defendant to go to the Court of Appeal to express his dissatisfaction with the Court’s previous ruling.

Meanwhile, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, representing the federal government in the proceedings, is pushing for the start of the terrorism trial.

As of the time of writing, Kanu’s counsel, led by Alloy Ejiamakor, is conferring on the next course of action.
