IPAC calls for Postponement of election in Jigawa due to economic hardship

Jigawa State’s Inter-Party Advisory Council, or IPAC, has proposed a revision to the state’s electoral law that would provide political parties 360 days’ notice to effectively prepare for elections.

This request was made during an emergency meeting convened in Dutse, the state capital, on Monday.

In a statement issued by Chairman Murtala Musa and Secretary Isa Adams, the council emphasized the necessity for reform given the current economic, social, and political realities affecting inhabitants throughout the state.

The council emphasized the widespread hardships endured by the population, necessitating fast and effective intervention from all stakeholders.

The council underlined the imminent expiration of present local government officials’ tenures, as well as the state’s and residents’ economic concerns.

“To reflect the current realities, there is a need to reform and amend the state’s electoral law, granting political parties a notice period of 360 days for adequate preparation,” it stated.

As a result, the council unanimously agreed to postpone the LG election to a later date.

The local government election is expected to take place in June.
