As Ondo's government descends into a "coma" due to a lack of leadership, pressure is growing on Akeredolu to step down

According to a Daily Trust article, growing worries about the leadership and overall state of affairs have arisen as a result of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s extended absence from Ondo.

Nearly 80 days have passed since Akeredolu returned from a three-month medical leave in Germany. He is said to be handling state business from his home in Ibadan and has not yet set foot in the state.

On the other hand, they stated that Ondo’s government activities have been little and the governor has not made many noticeable public appearances.

The report claims that there has been a lack of competent leadership, leaving most government tasks ignored except for salary payments.

Concerns regarding the state’s influence and ability to make decisions have increased as a result of reports that representation on national and regional platforms has decreased since August.

Opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have lambasted the scenario under Akeredolu’s claims of a distant government, characterizing Ondo as a victim of political chaos and incompetent leadership.

The people’s sympathy has been undermined by the bad management of the governor’s health by his handlers, according to Kennedy Peretei, the spokesperson for the Ondo PDP. As a result, the people are now irritated by the state’s weak governance.

“We have questioned them on the Ondo State’s leadership. Where is Aketi, we have asked them. From wherever they are concealing him, they ought to bring him. What’s happening is really embarrassing, and they’ve turned Ondo State into the laughingstock of jokes.

“Many of the individuals who formerly showed sympathy for the governor have now become irate and frustrated. Even seasoned politicians are starting to agree on how to break the impasse.

“It is regrettable, and we hope that a solution will be found soon,” he remarked.

There are already requests to activate the concept of necessity and force the deputy governor to assume leadership in Akeredolu’s absence.

Even though there are reports of the governor occasionally meeting with government representatives in his Ibadan office, concerns about the efficacy of remote administration remain due to the governor’s actual absence from the state.

Experts in law have also urged prompt action, highlighting the necessity for the deputy governor to take on a provisional leadership role till Akeredolu returns in full.

According to constitutional attorney Ebun Olu Adegoruwa (SAN), the governor is a human and is susceptible to illness. He requested the adoption of the necessity doctrine by the Ondo House of Assembly, pointing out that Akeredolu’s poor health should not be used as leverage over the government.

“While Nigerians have been praying for a speedy recovery for him, state business must continue.

Adegoruwa stated, “The doctrine of necessity, as stipulated in the constitution, should be activated to allow the deputy governor to assume acting responsibility for the state’s affairs until the governor returns safely.”

Barrister Abubakar Sanni, a human rights attorney, stated that Akeredolu ought to take the same medication that he recommended for former President Yar’adua.

“His hens had flown in to lay their eggs. A sauce meant for one person may not be suitable for another. “Let him experience the same medication he gave former President Yar’adua—’ physician, heal thyself.'”
