‘Battery-gate’ lawsuit for $500 million will begin paying out to former iPhone owners soon

Users were forced to purchase new iPhone models as a result of the 'battery-gate' scandal

To resolve a long-running lawsuit accusing the company of purposefully causing its customers’ batteries to drain faster than they should, Apple is preparing to pay out $500 million to retired iPhone users. Users were forced to purchase new iPhone models as a result of the ‘battery-gate’ scandal, which has been labeled “one of the largest consumer frauds in history.”

Despite continuing to deny any wrongdoing, Apple consented to the reimbursement in 2020, which will amount to about $65 per person, according to Mercury News.

Two iPhone customers, however, objected to the settlement terms, which caused payments to be suspended. Customers will finally receive their money after they lost this week’s appeal in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

In order to stop older iPhones from shutting down unexpectedly due to declining battery life, Apple acknowledged that iOS software had been modified in December 2017.

Due to complaints that Apple was secretly pressuring customers to purchase phones sooner than necessary, the company had to update its software and provide significant discounts on battery replacements. Apple was required to give the claims administrator the information on each person who had purchased or rented one of the models as part of the agreement.

Before December 21, 2017, they were iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and SE smartphones running iOS 10.2.1 or later, as well as iPhone 7 and 7 Plus devices running iOS 11.2 or later.
