Breaking: NLC Commences Protests in Lagos

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has launched a state-wide protest over the withdrawal of the petrol subsidy.

Protesters have gathered at Lagos’s Ikeja under-bridge. Last Wednesday, the NLC gave the federal government a seven-day deadline to remove all “anti-poor” and “insensitive” measures.

The union also urged civil society organizations (CSOs) and state councils to participate in the August 2 nationwide rally to protest the country’s rising cost of living.

The federal government’s efforts to halt the planned strike and demonstration were futile. President Bola Tinubu proclaimed the end of the petrol subsidy system during his inaugural address on May 29.

The announcement instantly resulted in an increase in the price of petrol at the pump, an exponential rise in transportation costs in some locations, and ballooning inflation across various market segments.

Tinubu, in a countrywide broadcast on Monday, offered palliatives to mitigate the impact of the loss of petrol subsidies on the general public.
