Chicago State University issues a statement regarding Tinubu’s academic history

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended Chicago State University, according to the institution of study. The university also acknowledged that the former Lagos helmsman earned a bachelor’s degree in 1979. This was stated in a letter the university sent to CBS Broadcasting Inc., also known as CBS News.

In a statement given to CBS, the school stated, “As an educational institution, we are occasionally asked to provide information related to student records.”

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, is a federal legislation that protects the confidentiality of student records and places restrictions on what institutions can make public, according to the school.

“In August 2023, a request was made to the U.S. federal court for the institution to provide relevant data related to educational records concerning Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, and a former CSU student,” it said.

“The American institution has verified that President Tinubu attended CSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1979. However, federal law forbids us from disclosing any more details without your permission or unless permitted by a court order.

“CSU is certain of the accuracy and reliability of our records regarding Tinubu’s fulfillment of the requirements for graduation and the awarding of a degree,” it says. A U.S. federal judge will decide whether the institution will produce the additional material requested, even though it is not a party to the Nigerian legal procedures that led to this request.

“We responded to the request for Tinubu’s academic records in a way that was totally compliant with federal law, our practices, and our regulations. In a statement, Chicago State University said it would respond exactly the same way to any request for student information from a third party.
